PokerStars is set to launch a brand new online sportsbook within the first quarter of the year, it has emerged this week. The famous online poker giant has long been keen to delve into the sports betting market, and its first ever sportsbook should go live before the end of March.
The news broke on Thursday, following an update from PokerStars parent company, Amaya Gaming. However, it was back in November that PokerStars first announced its intentions to launch casino and sports betting websites. According to Amaya Gaming, the website and therefore the launch of the new sportsbook is ahead of schedule.
Also due for launch this quarter, is the new PokerStars 7 client. It comes at a time when PokerStars are looking to heavily invest in other markets, with mobile gaming also one of its priorities. In order to get things moving, PokerStars recently signed up a former trading manager from Bet365 – Mr Ian Marmion. The web and mobile casino platforms of PokerStars are thought to be further down the pipeline, with launches penned for much later this year.
That being said, the Spanish version of PokerStars already saw blackjack and roulette added to their games in October 2014. That didn’t work out as planned, though, following difficulties with local Spanish regulations. The product has since been taken offline, although not before Amaya announced that they had acquired a “double-digit share” of Spain’s online gambling traffic.
At this moment in time, there may well be plans to bring Spain’s PokerStars casino games back online, although they would have to conform to strict Spanish rules regarding online gambling. In the meantime, a few details of the new PokerStars sportsbook are expected to be released within the coming weeks, as the site edges nearer to its launch date.
